Retirement Road Trip: Oregon coast, 9/17

0 miles on my truck (but 200 miles riding in a car) and still camped in Cory's driveway.

We took a road trip to the coast today.  Of course we had to stop and fish the Upmqua river on the way.  No fish, but some really neat rock formations.

As we drive closer to the coast, the forests grow thicker due to the additional rainfall.  Logging is still huge here, although not as large an industry in the past.  We did see one HUGE load of logs being loaded aboard a ship destined for the overseas market.

Of course, we had to dine on seafood and we found a nice little place on the water where the Umpqua River empties into the ocean.

We saw all kinds of coastal environments.  Everything from sandy beaches to rocky cliffs.  I'll let the pictures do the talking.  They do a better job of describing than I do.  :-)

We did see some whales, or I should say evidence of whales.  If you look real close in the picture below, you will three white puffs in the ocean near the horizon.  You will probably have to click on the picture to enlarge it.  Those are whale spouts.  That's water that is blown out of their blow hole when they surface.

Sunday we head off to The Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest for for fishing and an overnight of camping.  On Monday, Dave and Ann Wright head off on their own to Nevada and Colorado as they wander back to Wisconsin.  Cory and I will come back to his house to recover.  I'll head south into California on Wednesday, while Cory goes back to work........
