2021 Travels

A second year of COVID disorder.

Our 2021 camping year was another year of COVID, along with weather and health concerns.  As a result, our camping nights at 21 were the lowest in our 9 years of RV'ing together.  All of our excursions this year, excepting one, were to the Whiteface KOA in Wilmington, NY.   The campground is located near the base of Whiteface Mountain Ski Resort.  It is wooded, much like a State Park, but has full hookups.  The beautiful Ausable River borders the campground and the Olympic village of Lake Placid is nearby.  We really enjoy this park.

We started out the year having to cancel a six week trip South because of too much snow here at home.  After shoveling two feet of snow off the camper roof two different times because of snow storms, the third storm was the final straw.  We decided to cancel our trip and hunker down at home.

So here's a brief summary of our limited 2021 camping year.

Covid 2021 Summary 2021 YTD: 21 nights

Monday May 17-21: 4 nights at Whiteface/Lake Placid KOA,  Wilmington, NY

This is the first trip out this year and we spent four nights at the Whiteface KOA with Sue and Al.  Judy's son Matt joined us and camped in a KOA cabin across the street from us.  Since it was so early in the year, the crews were still cleaning up the fallen leaves from last year.  There was a huge pile of them by Matt's cabin, and we enjoyed seeing the squirrels and chipmunks running back and forth from the trees to the pile of leaves.  But, when Matt got back home he ended up with a $1,000 repair bill to fix the wiring on his car that had been chewed by the critters.  UGH!!

May 18th at the Whiteface KOA.
First trip out for the year, and on our favorite site,  D-4.
Judy's son Matt met us and camped in a cabin across the street from us.

Friday May 21-23: 3 nights at Iron City RV Park,  Lyon Mountain, NY

While Sue, Al and Matt headed home, Judy and I headed to Lyon Mountain, NY.  We had a retirement party to attend being hosted by my nephew at his camp on Upper Chateaugay Lake.

5/21: Iron City RV Park in Lyon Mountain  for Chuck Mason Retirement Party.

Monday July 12-16: 4 nights at Whiteface/Lake Placid KOA,  Wilmington, NY

After staying home for the month of June with other plans we got back to camping in July, again with Sue and Al.  We befriended a young couple across the street, from Virginia, camping in a beautiful Airstream.  They had never been to the Adirondacks before.

July 12th at Whiteface KOA, site D-4.

7/16:  Our new friends from Virginia who loved the Zoeys.  We met this wonderful family
on their first trip to the Adirondacks.  It was from them that we got the idea to buy the Solo Stove.

7/25:  Kitchen and living room in our 2021 Solitude 310.

Monday August 16-20: 4 nights at Whiteface/Lake Placid KOA,  Wilmington, NY

Another trip with Sue and Al, but this time we were joined by special friends Chris and Nava from Maine who tented across the street from us.  We were treated to a special feast of fresh lobster rolls brought all the way from Maine.

8/16 at Whiteface.  Lobster roll dinner delivered by camping friends from Maine,
Interesting tidbit, 5 of the 6 of us graduated within 2 years of each other from Gouverneur High School.

8/18:  Judy's sister giving one of our Zoey's some loving.

Monday August 30-September 3: 4 nights at Whiteface/Lake Placid KOA,  Wilmington, NY

This trip was a peaceful getaway with just the two of us and the Zoeys.  Lots of reading, peaceful dog walks, campfires and leisurely dinners on this trip.  It was a wonderful stress free few days.  The weather even cooperated.

Site C-5: Whiteface KOA.

8/30:  Night time campfire at Whiteface.

9/1:  Amazing trout dinner at the nearby Hungry Trout Restaurant.

9/2:  Happy Hour around the Solo Stove.

Friday September 24-27: 3 nights at Whiteface/Lake Placid KOA,  Wilmington, NY

This trip was to celebrate Judy's grandson's upcoming birthday.  Daughters Suzi, Terri and Suzi's two sons, along with a third grandchild, Matt's son Tyler, joined us with their camper.  Unfortunately, I had a bout with pancreatitis this weekend, which put a damper on some of the activities.  Anyway, it was good to see the family.

9/24, site D-3:  Whiteface KOA.  Judy's daughters Terri and Suzi,
along with Judy's grandsons, Mason, Jaxson and Tyler joined us with their camper.

As it turns out, that trip to Whiteface was our last outing for the year.  Two weeks later I was in the hospital for several days with an attack of acute pancreatitis.  As a result, we had to cancel a planned five week trip to Cape Hatteras and the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

And so that sums up our very limited travels for 2021.  Here's hoping for a better 2022. We are already starting to plan an April trip south to Savannah, St. Augustine, and Gulf Shores.  Stay tuned!!!
