Canada 2014: Mont Louis to Percé, Quebec

Saturday, September 13.

140 miles and camped at "Camping Cote Surprise" RV Park in Percé, Quebec.

Site 58 with Percé Rock in the background.

We are now at the eastern most point of our trip.

The drive to Percé was beautiful!!  Highway 132 pretty much winds along the ocean, with occasional turns inland.  Every few miles there are small fishing villages.  Many times the road seems to be built right on the ocean as the roadside cliffs offer no place for a road.  Unlike the St. Lawrence River Valley, the terrain on the outer part of the peninsula is mountainous.  The scenery was spectacular.  The traffic was light, although there was occasional road construction that would tie up traffic a bit.  We stopped for lunch in the village of Gaspé, and then continued on to Percé.

Amazing (and scary) 17% downgrade entering Percé.

The village of Percé is most famous for the rock formation just off shore, referred to as Percé Rock.  It is one of the world's largest natural arches located in water.  At one time in the 1500's there were records of three arches in the formation.  In 1845, the roof collapsed on the one of the remaining two arches, leaving the obelisk on the right.  It is estimated that the entire formation will be gone because of wind and wave action in another 16,000 years.  Mother Nature always wins.

View from campground.

Zoey has added Percé Rock to her Bucket List of places to visit.  :-))

We are going to stay two nights in Percé, and then head for New Brunswick on Monday.
