Perrot State Park to Merrick State Park |
Dave, Anne, Dennis and Jeff all met at 9:00 this morning to fish. I chose to take a hike and grocery shop instead. We agreed to meet at Merrick State Park, about 30 miles upriver from Perrot State Park. On the way up, I visited Trempealeau Wildlife refuge. It is a great spot for bird watching. I got to see egrets feeding, ducks swimming, and eagles soaring.
The shores of the Mississippi River are not like the rivers in Northern NY, where the river banks are well defined. Except where man has engineered the river with levees, locks, shipping channels, and dams, the Upper Mississippi is wide, swampy and wandering. Many wildlife refuges have been created along these areas.
I arrived at the campground about 2:30, after visiting a local Wall-Mart for supplies. Dave and Ann arrived back at the campground about 3:00. The weather is sunny, but a COLD 55 degrees. Fall is in the air.
Zoey is beside herself watching and chasing squirrels and rabbits. She never catches them, but she is always on the lookout. A person could walk right up my camper door, but a squirrel or rabbit will never get close. :-))
Its getting colder. Time for a campfire...........
