Today, Mary Ann, Eric and I went to Grand Rapids, the second largest city in Michigan after Detroit, to see the Frederik Meijer Gardens. The Meijer Gardens is a 132 acre botanical garden and sculpture park. The mission statement of of the Mejier Gardens is "To promote the enjoyment, understanding, and appreciation of gardens, sculpture, the natural environment, and the arts."
The Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park opened in 1995 and quickly became one of the premier cultural destinations of not only the United States, but the world. The 132 acres are filled with sculpture, ponds, garden rooms, native trees, grasses and wildlife that satisfies Meijer's goal of blending the visual art of humankind with the visual art of nature. Also on the grounds is the Lena Meijer Conservatory, a 15,000 square foot structure that houses several indoor gardens.
We spent over two hours walking the grounds, and by then were ready for food and refreshments. Also located in Grand Rapids is the Founders Brewery. The tap room overlooks the brewing facilities, and there is an open air porch for sitting and sipping. Hand crafted sandwiches and snacks are also available. We sampled both the sandwiches and the brews. The companies web site lists what's on tap for each day.
We ended the day back at Mary Ann and Eric's house to watch a little Monday Night Football. The Baltimore Ravens defeated the Cincinnati Bengals, but we did get to see local Gouverneur kid Brian Leonard play for the Bengals.
Tuesday Zoey and I are off to Mackinaw City in Northern Michigan.
