Retirement Road Trip 2011: Day 17, Sunday 9/11

281 miles, camped on the Columbia River at Umatilla Marina and RV Park, Umatilla, Oregon.  I'm still traveling with Dave and Ann Wright.

Another HOT day in the West.  The temperature hit 95 in my truck thermometer this afternoon. We pulled up stakes and Left Heyburn State Park about 10:00 AM.  The first stop of the day was a visit to see George Carlson, a long time artist friend and mentor to Dave and Ann, who has a home and studio nearby.  A planned two hour visit ended up lasting four hours.

George goes back to the days of Elizabeth, Colorado when Dave and Ann and a small community of artists, including George, lived there.  After a few phone calls over the previous couple of days, we had finally found a common time to visit.  George and Pam live on beautiful Black Lake just outside of St. Maries, Idaho.  George has a studio in Harrison, a few miles away.  We visited their home first.  George is as talented a landscaper as he is artist.  His studio in Harrison was breathtaking.  George has done a lot of sculpture in the past.  His current interest is large oil paintings of landscapes.  One of his favorite subjects is the Palouse region, which we had visited yesterday, in Washington.

Here is an interesting YouTube video of George discussing art and how he has evolved over the years.  He is very personable and I learned a lot visiting with him.

We finally left the George and Pam about 3:00.  We wanted to make Oregon, so we headed west on I-90 and then south on 395.  We reached Umatilla, Oregon about 7:30 in the evening.  The RV park is part of a marina on the Columbia river.  There was a lot of road noise from the nearby interstate, but it didn't phase me a bit.  I slept well.

Temperature forecast for Monday is sunny and 91.  When is this nice weather ever going to end?  :-)
