May and June 2024: Three Short Weekend Trips

That should read "times two" now.

Friday, 5/17:  169 miles, Moose Hillock Resort, Fort Ann, NY

Site 204

Moose Hillock is a new campground/resort for us.  The sites are HUGE and PRIVATE.  We had reserved one that appeared to have open forest canopy to the north for our Starlink coverage, and sure enough it worked.    So why did we choose to go camping this weekend only 8 days after we just finished up an 8 week trip to Texas???  Not because it's near Lake George, because we have visited LG many times in the past.  Not because of the nice weather, even though it was.

The real reason............we are adding an 8 week old Golden Retriever puppy to our household!!!  Call us crazy, but Parker now is going to have a sister, Maggie.  And to add to the fun and games, Judy's daughter Christl is joining us to adopt Maggie's littermate and brother, Benny.  Twice the fun!!!!

Sunday, 5/19:  169 miles and we are back home.

Fortunately, Maggie turns out to be another great traveler, just like her big brother.  And Parker and Maggie thoroughly enjoy each other.

Thursday, 5/23: 252 miles, Interlake RV Resort, Rhinebeck, NY

Site 151

We haven't camped on Memorial Day Weekend  since we met 11 years ago.  In retirement, we've tended to avoid the busy Holidays.  But this year is an exception.  Judy's daughter Suzi and her boyfriend Ken, along with Suzi's 2 sons are meeting us.  Ken has a permanent longterm unit at the park.

While most of the long term sites were already occupied, when we arrived the short term section was nearly empty.  But that quickly changed by Friday night.

Thursday evening.

Saturday morning.

Saturday, Suzi and Ken took us to a nearby craft brewery, Slow Fox Farm Brewery.  It was a beautiful afternoon and we enjoyed snacks and a craft brew.

On Sunday we went to Rose Hill Farm in Red Hook.  Rose Hill is apple based and makes wines and hard cider beer.  Rose Hill Farm has a long history going back to 1812!!  Lobster rolls and oysters were on the menu when we were there, so of course that's what we chose, along with a craft cider IPA.

For several of the nights, Judy's grandsons decided to sleep in the camper with us.  With the pups, that was a zoo, but oh what a ball watching all the antics.

Parker and Maggie are roughly a year apart in age, and 60 pounds difference in weight now, but what a pair.  This relationship is going to be good for both of them.  As for us, it will be good as long as we survive puppyhood.  Haha.

Tuesday, 5/28:  Another 252 miles and we're back home.

I have to say, my apprehensions about camping on a crowded weekend were for naught.  There were kids, bicycles, dogs, and campfires everywhere.  It brought back fond memories of when I camped with my kids when they were young, and the only time we had off were weekends and holidays.  It was a wonderful weekend.

Friday, 6/28: 2 nights & 149 miles roundtrip, Little Wolf Campground, Tupper Lake, NY

FHU site 53

We had scheduled this trip for some time to meet up with Judy's daughter.  Christl was going to participate in the annual Tupper Lake Tin Man (swim, bike, run) event.  However.....she suffered an achilles strain while training, so she couldn't participate.  But she did meet us for the weekend anyway.  We checked in on a beautiful warm and sunny Friday afternoon.  Saturday was,..........well, awful.  Rain, rain and more rain.  I felt sorry for the athletes.  We went to P-2's Irish Pub for a nice lunch.  Dinner was at a Church Social in Lake Clear with Christl's friends Mike and Mindy.

Monday morning the weather cleared again.  Christl took Maggie for her first real swim in the pond.  By 11:00 we all said our goodbyes and were headed back home.

I liked Little Wolf.  It is owned by the town and is not fancy, but easy to park in and nearby to a lot of activities in both Tupper Lake, as well as Saranac Lake and Lake Placid.  Many of the campers were there for the entire season, outfitted with decks and canopies.  We would definitely camp there again.

So that's it for our summer weekend camping.  About the middle of August we are heading out on a two week New England trip, and then in September, a 6 week trip to Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois.

Stay tuned.
