2024 Spring Trip: Georgia, Kentucky, West Virginia, HOME

Sunday, 4/28:  220 miles, parked at Camp David RV Park, Columbus, GA

A nice non-Interstate drive today.

Camp David is a new stop for us.  It's a very nice small park and the rates were very reasonable.  There appeared to be many long term sites, and they were nicely maintained.  The walking trail to and around the lake was an added bonus.  We would definitely stay here again.

Site 24,  with a sapling that didn't survive the winter.

Nearly empty short term section.

Hiking trail to the lake.

Morning moon over the lake.

Monday, 4/29:  225 miles, parked at Hawkins Point RV Park, Rossville, GA

Interstate all the way.  I-185, I-85, I-285 around Atlanta, then I-75.

This is another new find for us.  Hawkins Point is a combination RV park and upscale, covered RV storage facility.  The campsites are all relatively new, and they are planning on expanding the campground with more sites across the street.

Tuesday, 4/30:  265 miles, parked at Fort Boonesborough SP, Richmond, KY

Fort Boonesborough State Park is one of our "Go To" parks when in the Lexington area.  It's not fancy and there is some nearby highway and gravel pit noise, but the sits are large and grassy.  Most of the campground is water and 30/50 amp electric service only.  There are a few full hookups, but the sites are closer together and not as large.  Water spigots are shared between two sites, and the dump station is convenient.

A re-creation of the real Fort Boonesborough is a part of the park and right next door to the campground.  While we didn't visit this year, we have in the past. Reenactors do an excellent job of describing the times of the past fort and community and is well worth a visit.

Our main purpose for our stop this year was to visit new friends we discovered a year ago when camping at Carrabelle Beach.  On a chance dog walk with Parker last year, I met Dennis and Lisa, and their Golden puppy, River.  River is almost the exact age as Parker and the pups hit it off immediately.  We connected again last October for a brief visit, and made it a point to connect for a longer visit this year when in the area.  Upon seeing each other, Parker and River played until neither one could move.

Besides River and Parker connecting, we spent some wonderful time with Dennis and Lisa.  They are building a beautiful new home, with we got to check on the construction process with them.  We also enjoyed a wonderful evening having dinner and listening to live music at the Proud Mary BBQ.  We sat outside on the deck overlooking the music and the Kentucky River.

Many thanks to Dennis and Lisa for showing us around.  We agreed to meet again next year.  Now, it's on to West Virginia for the weekend.

Friday, 5/3:  300 miles, parked in the driveway of Matt and Jaime Sipher, WV

Interstates 64 and 79 today.

We had a rainy drive today, be we out raced the weather driving northeast.  We were able to set up before the rain started, then it rained most of the night and the next day.  Matt said they could use the rain.

It is always great to see Matt and Jaime, but with two athletic kids in 7th and 9th grade, they are on the go constantly.  We did manage to collect everyone to have dinner at the Longhorn Steakhouse Saturday evening.  We had never been to one, and the filet mignon was excellent!!

Sunday turned out warm and sunny, and got lots of walks in with Parker.  We even caught a deer passing through the property.

On Sunday Jaime's parents, Gary and Linda stopped over for a dinner of pizza and wings with the gang.  Matt, Jaime and are a busy, busy family.  But it's always good to catch up, even briefly.  The kid are growing up soooo fast.  When around grand children, I'm always reminded of the Kenny Chesney song, "Don't Blink".

Monday, 5/6:  258 miles, parked at the KOA in Westfield, NY

Interstates 79 and 81 all the way today.

We got on the road about 9:30, and it was smooth driving all the way.   There was road construction here and there, but no delays.  We pulled into the KOA just before 2:00.  This is always a stop for us when in the area.  Having opened for the season only a week ago, the campground was nearly empty.

Tuesday, 5/7:  310 miles and HOME!

I-79 to I-90 and finally US 11.

We were on the road by 9:00, and 5 hours later back into our driveway.  The drive was smooth, except for occasional construction on I-90.

After a fantastic 8 week, nearly 5,000 mile trip, time to unpack and start spring yard chores.

Until our next adventure......
