Monday, 10/1: 167 miles and parked at Boardman Marina RV Park, Boardman, Oregon

Sunset over the Columbia. |
We were on the road from Joseph by about 9:45, and we arrived in Boardman at 1:30. It was a short drive of only 167 miles over good roads. We have camped here before and find this park to be very pleasant, with large sites, and a wonderful view of the Columbia River.
As Judy was reading over the park literature, she saw an ad for a local craft brewery. We had never heard of it before when in the Boardman area. We looked it up, and sure enough, it was only a mile away. Ordnance Brewing turned out to be a real treat. The "pub" is located right in the brewery itself. As you sip, you can watch the brewing staff work and you can hear all the sounds of pumps, fans, etc. The bar tables were made out of pallets. Mike, our bartender, turned out to be great. He is a retired 38 year railroad worker, and was very chatty. He showed us around and we got to talking about traveling, and why we were so far from home. In the course of visiting, I casually mentioned that I helped make maple syrup in March back east. He said that he had never tasted real maple syrup. The minute we got bak to the camper we plucked a quart from our traveling stash and took it back to him as a gift. You would have thought he won the lottery.

Tuesday, 10/2: 189 miles and parked at Tumalo State Park, near Bend, Oregon.
We left Boardman about 10:30 and arrived at Tumalo State Park right about 2:00. It was a very scenic drive today, first on Interstate 84 along the Columbia River, and later through dryland wheat farms and grazing beef cattle ranges while going south on two lane State Route 97.
By the time we set up it was sunny and 70. We enjoyed a beer outside and relaxed. Later, after a nap and dog walking, we made tacos for dinner.
Wednesday, 10/3:
It was a frisky 32 degrees when I woke this morning. First thing I did was turn on the water in the kitchen sink to be sure the outside hose had not frozen. We had water. Whew!! It gradually warmed, and about 10:30 my son Cory showed up. He lives in the Eugene area about two hours away. I haven't seen him in over a year. About noon we headed into Bend. Cory has worked here in the past, so he knew his way around a little. Judy needed a hair cut, so while she got that done, Cory and I went next door to a Fred Myer store and resupplied our wine and beer stocks. When Judy was done, we headed to the BBC (not the British Broadcasting Company) but the Bend Brewing Company for a light lunch and a brew.
After that, we still had a bit of grocery shopping to do, so we found a nearby Trader Joe's. I don't think we had ever been to one. Despite all the hype, and the fact the store was mobbed, we were not impressed. I guess I don't understand the fascination with Trader Joe's. I'll have to figure that one out.
Back at the camper, we got out the fire pit and sat around and had drinks and chatted. For dinner we grilled tenderloin steaks. About 7:30 we headed inside because of the cold and watched TV. Everyone turned in about 10:00. Cory and his dog slept outside in Cory's tent. I used to be tough like that too. :-)))
Thursday, 10/4:
It was much warmer this morning, only 40. We had a relaxing morning and cooked up some bacon and eggs for breakfast. After breakfast, we took a half hour drive to Tumalo Falls. The drive was scenic, and the falls were nice.
We ate lunch at 7th Street Brew House in Redmond. This restaurant is one of two, the other in Bend, that belong to Cascade Lakes Brewery.
We picked Judy's daughter Terri up at the Redmond Airport about 2:30. For the past four years, whenever we visit Oregon, Terri has flown out to meet us. It's always a fun time. We went back to camper to decompress, then to Crux in Bend for a sampling and snacks.
We followed that up with a short half mile drive to Immersion Brewing for a tasting and tacos for dinner.
Then it was back to camper to sit around the fire pit. Terri loves tenting and we had brought along one for her, so Cory and Terri camped out in their tents.
Tomorrow, Friday, we pack up and move on to Eugene for a 4 night stay.
