Spring Trip 2015: Gouverneur to Denver

Monday, May 4th.  341 miles and camped at Erie KOA in McKean, Pennsylvania.

It was nice weather, but it is the same old trip that we use when going to Matt's.  I've traveled this route many, many times.  I still get impressed by the amount of of grapes in western NY and Pennsylvania.

Tuesday, May 5th.  454 miles and camped at the KOA in Crawfordsville, Indiana.

It rained, sometimes heavy, all morning.  But it was sunny and 88 when we arrived at the campground.  We drove past acres and acres of flat farmland today.  Ground was being tilled and corn planted everywhere.  The farmers were busy.

Wednesday, May 6th.  467 miles and camped at the Kansas City East KOA in Oak Grove, Missouri.

There were rain showers in the morning, followed by gusty winds in the afternoon.  There are tornado warnings out for Thursday through Saturday for the central part of the country.  The flat lands of Indiana and Illinois gave way to the rolling country side of Missouri.

Thursday, May 7th.  322 miles and camped at the WaKeeney KOA in WaKeeney, Kansas.

We dodged severe weather all day, and we got lucky.  Only a few heavy rain drops. showed up, but very, very windy.  Kansas is dry, with only a few trees here and there to provide shade.  One thing we noticed coming across Kansas was the number of stone fence posts, and an occasional sign that read Post Rock Country.  In fact, the KOA owner had a few stone fence posts set up for decorative purposes.  I imagine they are collectors items now.  Apparently there were so few trees that the early settlers had no wood for fence posts, so they quarried limestone for fence posts.  Interesting story.  Check out the links.

Friday, May 9th.  267 miles and camped at the Denver East KOA in Strasburg, Colorado.

Today was a short day.  A change in weather was predicted for the weekend.  The temperature was dropping and rain showers just started as we set up at the campground.  The sites were really tight at this KOA, but the staff was very friendly and accommodating.

That night a severe thunderstorm rolled through with heavy thunder and lightning, wind, and rain.  We were up all night with a very, very scared Golden Retriever.  It was not a fun night.  Little did we know this was just the beginning of a series of misadventures that was really going to try our patience over the next few days.
