Monday 10/7: 108 miles and parked at Armitage Campground, Eugene, Oregon
After a few morning chores, we were on the road by 11:00 We have a short drive today. Even though we were going through the mountains, we got the best mileage of the trip today. Why? It was all downhill from the High Desert region of Oregon to the Willamette Valley. We arrived at Armitage County Park about 1:30 for a 5 night stay. We have stayed at this very nice county park several times. In fact, we are on the same site where we were married almost 5 years ago. After setting up and some down time, we went to Cory's house, about 15 minutes away, where he grilled burgers for dinner. We were back to the camper by 7:30 for some reading and TV.
We woke to the low 40's and a light drizzle. The rain was not heavy, just an on and off drizzle all day. Cory came over about 10:30. He chauffeured us around all day. Judy got a hair cut at a local Super Cuts and Cory and I went to a nearby Walmart for some supplies. Judy's daughter Terri is flying from Manhatten to spend a few days with us. We picked her up at the Eugene Airport about 12:30.
The Lane Country Farmers Market was going on today until 3:00, so we stopped there soon after picking Terri up. We stocked up on some wonderful produce. The products are not cheap, but the quality makes up for it, and we are supporting local farms.
After shopping at the market, we went to Hop Valley Brewing for a beer and a late lunch
Then it was back to camper for some down time. We ended up not being hungry because of the late lunch, so Judy made snacks for dinner, which we nibbled on while watching a couple movies. Cory and Terri headed back to his house about 8:00. Cory has a spare bedroom, so Terri and her dog will have more space than the camper. We finished the evening watching NCIS on TV before bedtime.
Turned out, we were the first customers of the day. Kathy, our hostess, was excellent. She was very chatty and interesting. Terri discovered that she was a running coach, so she and Terri had a great visit. Terri is running the Chicago Marathon in 4 days. Kathy was a world class runner earlier in life, and coaches a running club in Eugene. I got to meet the head wine maker, who is from Argentina. We had a long and very interesting visit and ended up buying 6 bottles, which he signed for us. Then Kathy got out a dessert wine to sample. It was amazing and we added 2 bottles of that to the order. We had a fun time at Silvan Ridge.
Right across the road is Sweet Cheeks Winery. We have been there before and we really like their wines. We each had a tasting of different wines. They have a beautiful patio and grounds, but it was too cold to sit outside. We ended up selecting some varieties and bought a case.
On the way back to the camper, we stopped at the Cascades Raptor Center where they rehab injured raptors. The successful recoveries they release back to the wild. Those that are permanently disabled are cared for and kept on display for educational purposes. They have an amazing collection of birds. This stop turned out to be one of the highlights of our Eugene visit.
We got back to camper about 5:00. Judy cooked a skillet dinner recipe we like. Cory and Terri left by 9:00.
Another 40 morning with fog that cleared by 10:00. Cory had to work this morning, so we picked Terri up and brought her back to the camper. We had to change sites today. When I made the original reservations, we had only planned to stay 3 nights. But later, when I tried to add a couple more nights the site 30 was no longer available. So we had to move to site 27. The move only took a half hour or so.
Cory got back from work about 1:00 we headed to Elkhorn Brew Pub and had a light lunch. Then we stopped at the Wildcraft Pub that specializes in hard cider.
We were home by 4:00 and Judy and Terri worked on their puzzle. They are both lovers of jig saw puzzles.
For dinner we cooked up our Instant Pot rib recipe. Cory and Terri headed back to his house by 9:00.
We always try to visit the Becker Winery when we are in Oregon. When Cory lived in Roseburg, the winery was only 15 minutes away. Now that he has moved to Eugene, a visit is about hour and half away. We have become friends with owners over the years. It is a very small, family business that uses no irrigation. Today, they were finishing the last day of harvesting. We always buy a case, and this year was no exception.
On the way back to Eugene, we drove by Iris Winery. When we went to visit yesterday they were closed, but today they were open. I'm glad we stopped. We sat on the patio overlooking a gorgeous view while we sampled.
Terri has to fly out early tomorrow, so she moved her stuff into the camper and stayed with us tonight.
Chilly again this morning. Terri had to fly out early, so we were up at 4:30 AM, and got to airport about 5:15 for her 6:00 flight to Chicago. She is running the Chicago Marathon Sunday.
