Spring 2018 Southern Trip: Savannah, Georgia

Monday 4/9:  243 miles and parked at Skidaway Island State Park, Savannah, GA

Site 79

We woke to a light rain in Myrtle Beach and had to hitch up in the rain.  We ended up having a light drizzle all day.  It was a pleasant drive, even though rain.  I-95 traffic was light.  We arrived at Skidaway about 2:30.  It was 60 and overcast.  A sign at check in said the park is completely full.  The campground here is one of the best state parks we have ever stayed at.  The interior roads are paved, and the sites are HUGE.  I had wanted a full hookup site, but when I reserved a month or so ago, they were all taken.  So our site is water and electric only, which worked out just fine.  About 5:00 we  decided to take a short nap before dinner.  We woke up at 8:00!!!!!  Guess we were tired.  Apparently the driving was catching up with us.  We elected to have popcorn for dinner and watched TV the rest of the evening.

Tuesday 4/10:

Again, another day of on and off misty rain.  We did a couple loads of laundry this morning, then we drove to Robert and Charlotte's about noon. They are former Potsdam, NY residents who got sick of  the northern winter weather and moved south.  They love it.  Charlotte used to teach with me at Potsdam High School.  After catching up, they took us to the Old Historic District of Savannah to walk around.  We started at the City Market and then on to the American Prohibition Museum.

Next are a few photos from the Prohibition Museum.

The 18th Amendment created all kinds of "unintended consequences", such as plea bargaining since the courts were over whelmed with cases.  After the museum, which was fascinating, we had a late lunch at one of their favorite breweries, Moon River Brewing.  We have been there before, and as always, the food and beer were great.

After lunch, we toured the Davenport House Museum.  This home, built by Isiah Davenport around 1820, has been preserved and is now a museum.  It was very interesting touring this nearly 200 year old southern home.

After the tour, we left Robert and Charlotte and were back to the camper by 6:00.  It was a fun and busy day.  Dinner was a light snack.

Wednesday 4/11:

Today was a beautiful clear and sunny day.  It was 50 degrees when I woke, but eventually got up to 72.  We connected with Robert and Char about 11:30 and headed for nearby Tybee Island.  We stopped and toured Fort Pulaski on the way.  I found it really interesting, although Judy told me that this was the one and only fort tour we were taking on this trip.  :-))

We had a great lunch at the A-J's Dockside Restaurant where we ate outside on the deck, and the food was excellent.  Then we went to the Tybee Island Beach and walked out on the Tybee Pier.  It was fun watching people fish.

Back at Robert and Char's house, we said our goodbyes.  They are such great hosts.  We were back home to the camper by 5:00, in time to relax, and then grill pork tenderloins outside for dinner.

Tomorrow, it is on to St. Augustine, Florida.
