Prologue:
Well friends, it's time for another RV adventure. For this trip we are headed south for a month. April is "mud season" here in Northern NY, and we are growing weary of snow, ice, and lack of green vegetation. Our camping buddies, Sue (Judy's sister) and Al Meyer are traveling with us. We plan stops in Williamsburg, VA; Myrtle Beach, SC; Charleston SC; Savannah, GA; Starke, FL; Gulf Shores, AL; Nashville, TN; and finally Lexington, KY. Stay tuned for updates about our adventures and misadventures.
Friday, 3/29: 343 miles and parked at Jonestown KOA, Jonestown, Pennsylvania

The first stop is the KOA at Jonestown. The park is located right off Interstate 81 and easily assessable. Besides, it is open year round, something rare in northern climates. We have stayed here many times in the past.
After a cold, wet and dreary drive, about 4:00 we arrived to 57 degrees and sunshine. We grilled steaks to celebrate our first night on the road.
Saturday, 3/30: 139 miles and parked at Candy Hill Campground, Winchester, Virginia

Forsythia in bloom |
We had a short drive today after the long one yesterday. We were on the road about 11:00 AM and arrived at Candy Hill about 1:45. The entire trip was on I-81. While the traffic was heavy, the road conditions were good. We did hit a 15 minute delay once for construction, but that was it for problems.
Candy Hill is a very pleasant park, although we had a lot of road noise. Road noise doesn't bother. There is a difference between "camping" and "traveling" and when traveling we look for connivence. I think we finally found Spring weather. The sky was sunny, temperature hit 75, the trees are in bloom and the Forsythia is in bloom. With this beautiful weather, we sat outside for our traditional "after setup road trip beer". The four us decided to eat out for dinner at a nearby restaurant called the Roma. That's a bit nostalgic since a long time dining institution in our home town was call the Roma. Unfortunately our Roma closed years ago, so this was a "blast from the past" of sorts. I had an excellent steak marsala, while Judy ate a very good seafood gumbo.
Back at the campground we sat around the fire pit and had sipped on after dinner drinks. Then we crashed early.
Sunday, 3/31: 184 miles and parked at American Heritage RV Park, Williamsburg, VA
Site 39. Sue and Al are right next door at 40. Nice and spacious with concrete paitos. |
We were on the road by 10:30 and the drive today was relatively short. A lot of it was on I-95, which sometimes can be hectic. However, today it wasn't too bad with only a couple areas of really heavy traffic. We arrived at the campground about 2:30 to light rain, but that quickly passed. After setup and our customary brew, we opted for down time and a nap. We decided to made a skillet recipe for beef and rice for dinner, and it was excellent. We sat around the fire pit with Sue and Al, and then crashed.
Tomorrow we are off to explore the Historic Williamsburg area. We have three full days here so there is no need to rush like crazy to see everything at once...... More later.
